The barn owl is an endangered owl that needs help to establish itself again. The berg owls in Skåne Djurpark participate in the berg owl project. Every year, the park releases ringed owl chicks to reintroduce the owl in Skåne.

Berguven, a mythical owl

Berguven har väckt skräck hos människor i många år. Förr i tiden trodde man att berguvens hoande läte förutspådde oväder och olyckor. Man förbjöd barn att härma berguvens läte.

Nykläckta ungar har en ljusgrå dundräkt och ser ut som spå troll. Historier om skogstroll sägs komma ifrån berguvens trolliknande ungar.

Fridlyst berguv

1950 fridlystes berguven i Sverige. Berguven har jagats av människan eftersom den konkurrerade om småviltet, och fram till 1925 utgick till och med skottpengar.

I slutet av 60-talet startades Berguvsprojektet runt om i landet, och numera släpper man på flera platser ut berguvsungar för att hjälpa berguven att etablera sig på nytt.

Jagar på natten

The mountain owl mainly hunts at night and feeds on small rodents and small game such as hares, ducks and crows. It also eats fish, frogs and small birds, and can sometimes also take other owls and birds of prey.

The world's largest owl

The mountain owl weighs 2-4 kg and is thus the world's heaviest and largest owl. It is easily recognized by its characteristic appearance with large earlobes and amber eyes.

The warning sound of the mountain owl is a barking sound. The cubs beg for food with a humming sound that can be heard during nights in the month of August. During spring-winter, the male sings with a deep hoot, and the female responds with a gruff bark.
